Phase 1 of the £41m Departure Lounge Extension at Edinburgh Airport has now opened for business. As the first instalment of the largest single project in the airport's 30 year history, this is a major milestone in the 24 month programme of works and for the overall development strategy.

Construction work started at the beginning of this year and at 4am on the 16th November the new area was handed over, on budget and exactly on programme.

The newly opened facilities provide over 2,600m2 of additional space which contains Boots, Bureau De Change and World Duty Free along with a new restaurant and bar offerings from The Gathering and JD Wetherspoons.

Work is already underway on Phase 2 which sees a major transformation of the existing lounge and facilities. A new security search facility will be formed enabling easier and quicker transition from landside check-in through to the new Departure Lounge.

The overall project is programmed to complete in January 2011. The finished Departure Lounge will have the capacity to handle current and future passenger volumes, which are rising consistently year on year.

Doig+Smith have been involved in this project since it's inception in 2005 as commercial managers and advisors to BAA and are proud to continue their history of delivering projects on time and within budget despite the many challenges set by airside working, a live airport environment and several demanding retail tenants.
