Steve McDonald, an Associate with Doig+Smith and Lizanne McMurrich from North Lanarkshire Council tried out their football skills on the indoor sports pitch at the new £31m Ravenscraig Regional Sports facility now that building work has been completed.
The new sports facility, which is built on the site of the former steel works, forms part of Sports Scotland’s Regional Strategy. Doig+Smith as Project Managers and Cost Consultants delivered the project on time and within a challenging budget with little contingency available, which is a considerable achievement for a project of this size and complexity.
The stunning sports facility has now been officially handed over to North Lanarkshire Council and through their operator, North Lanarkshire Leisure, will open to the public in the autumn.
The full training and community facility boasts indoor facilities including a full sized indoor 3G FIFA 2 star artificial football pitch; an athletics sprint track; a nine court sports hall, fully equipped strength and conditioning gym; dance studios; accommodation for Motherwell College; spectator viewing areas; café and ancillary office space and changing rooms.
Outside the building there is a further full sized outdoor 3G FIFA 2 star artificial football pitch with six five-a-side football pitches and a jogging track.
Steve McDonald, said, “We have all been working very hard to deliver this challenging project and it was great to finally have a chance to try out the football pitch. It’s a first class sports facility and a tremendous training facility for athletes as well as a benefit for the community and beyond.”
The complex will be the main venue for the International Children’s Games in 2011 and will be a training venue for the 2012 Olympic Games. It has also been designed to host shows, concerts and exhibitions, as well as national sporting and leisure events.
Lizanne McMurrich, North Lanarkshire Council’s Head of Community Information & Learning added, “Ravenscraig is a key part of our sports strategy goals of increasing participation and improving performance in sport and physical activity. It’s been a great project to be involved in, one in which all partners have worked well together to deliver it on time and on budget.”
