Glasgow - New South Glasgow Hospitals

Scope of project:

  • Doig+Smith are part of the team currently developing the new South Glasgow Hospitals project on the site of the existing Southern General Hospital. The hospitals include a new 1,000 bed acute adult hospital, a 240 bed children's hospital, support accommodation and associated landscaping works and infrastructure works. The facilities, spanning 170,000m2, will centralise services currently provided by three existing hospitals and will form one of the largest health amenities in Europe.

Dumfries & Galloway - Redevelopment of Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary

Scope of project:

  • Services were provided to the Board through Frameworks Scotland and the BAM Team. The project comprised a 172 bed ward block extension to the existing DGRI facility together with refurbishment and alterations to approximately 80% of the existing Acute Care Hospital.
  • The refurbishment works required to be carried out in multi phases over a four year period in a live hospital environment where continued business continuity was paramount to the Hospital.

Scope of project:

  • The project provides accommodation for approximately 21,000m2 of highly serviced Medical Laboratory Space to support Blood Sciences, Medical Genetics, Medical Pathology & Micro-Biology within 3 primary accommodation units distributed around a central secure service yard linked to Facilities Management and the National Distribution Centre servicing the proposed new Southern General Hospital. Edinburgh - Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh

Scope of project:

  • Services were provided to the Hospital Board through Frameworks Scotland and the BAM Team. The project comprised a new 5 storey Children's Hospital with a basement service tunnel and links to the existing Edinburgh Royal Infirmary at ground and first floor levels.
  • Departments included Emergency, Acute Assessment, Medical, Surgical, Outpatients, Operating Theatres and Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) together with an integral central "Ozone" atrium and landscaped courtyards. The overall gross floor area was 35,867m2

Edinburgh - Andrew Duncan Unit, Royal Edinburgh Hospital

Scope of project:

  • Alteration and upgrade to the existing Balcarres and Craiglockhart Wards to create 40 bed adult mental health wards with improved safety, fire protection and quality of in-patient experience. Including a number of other facilities/rooms – Secure Interview, Patient Activity, Dispensary, Laundry, DSR, Staff areas, Dining areas, Toilets/Bathrooms and Reception with the works carried out in two phases during a 24hour live Hospital.
  • The accommodation was designed to be fit for purpose and to comply with HAI–SCRIBE strategy and Anti-ligature requirements as part of NHS Improving Care, Investing in Change programme of modernisation.

Scope of project:

  • The project involved the construction of a new Doctor Surgery on behalf of the Doctor's practice, financed by the NHS.
  • The building provides a doctors surgery, nurse/outpatients facilities, together with meeting room/boardroom space for educational lectures and the like, outwith surgery times.

Our Role:

Full pre and post contract works, cost advice and planning, the preparation of Bills of Quantities, tendering and reporting on offers received and full post contract services including the agreement of the Final Account with the Contractor. In addition we undertook value engineering, and worked with the Design Team and Doctors in gaining additional funding from the NHS.

Kintyre - Campbeltown Dental Centre

Scope of project:

  • The project involved the design & build of a new Dental Facility in Campbeltown, Kintyre, provided to the Board through the BAM Construction Ltd team through the Frameworks Scotland process.
  • The facility provided space for both local independent dental practitioners and NHS practitioners in a clinical teaching environment. Training facilities for undergraduate outreach dental training was provided with links to the University of Glasgow

Carlisle - Carleton Clinic, Carlisle

Scope of project:

  • We were asked by the Trust to prepare a Feasibility Cost Study for proposed alterations and refurbishment at the Carleton Clinic in Carlisle
  • Carleton Clinic is a Mental Health Unit for Cumbria and the plan was to refurbish the Pennine Dementia Unit and the Ruskin Assessment Unit within the Clinic
  • The Pennine Unit alterations comprised a 170m2 new build extension with 715m2 refurbishment at a cost of £1.5m. The Ruskin Unit comprised a 130m2 new build extension and 765m2 refurbishment at a cost of £1.4m

Glasgow - Accident & Emergency Expansion, Glasgow Royal Infirmary

Scope of project:

  • The project comprised alterations to the existing Accident & Emergency Department at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary to expand the department to create one of the largest A&E Departments in Europe, allowing a rationalised function and layout.
  • The additional area required for expansion was provided through the decanting of the Plastics Department into new accommodation nearby (not part of this contract). The project was carried out in a multi-phased manner, allowing continuity of A&E business and maintaining services to adjacent areas and departments.

Glasgow - Maternity OPD, Southern General Hospital

Scope of project:

  • The project comprised alterations to an existing wing of the Maternity Building and the creation of an additional floor by overbuilding the existing.
  • The additional floor was created by way of a steel framed overbuilding requiring "goal post" type construction. The ground floor below was completely refurbished. Existing utilities / services required diverting prior to the construction works and the existing adjacent main building entrance required to be kept in operation throughout.
