Project Description

The phased Design & Build construction of a 8,945m² college campus, including new and refurbished areas, on the grounds of the existing (live) site of Banff & Buchan College, Fraserburgh.

The project delivered more flexibility and more usable space centred around a striking central atrium which houses the new reception, library, social areas and workspaces. Above the atrium is a new mezzanine level, offering social spaces as well as a custom-built employability area, a coffee shop and Student’s Association.

The College required their new Learning Resource Centre to be centrally placed and easily accessible. The brief included a number of “centrally placed” requirements and careful space planning was met to ensure the new hub providing learning materials, general literature and IT access was positioned in such a way as to ensure full and easy utilisation. This was coupled with architectural lighting, aesthetic lines, and sponsor defined furniture to provide a feature space complying with the College’s brief.

Benefits To Client

  • Focused M&E cost management: The college’s challenging BREEAM aspirations were met by focused commercial management from Doig+Smith’s experienced M&E specialists. Their knowledge on previous projects was invaluable in attaining the College requirements, especially as the project involved a degree of refurbishment.
  • Cost Management: Close cost control and specific reporting was required from the project sponsor, as the College was investing public funds in key areas. On this manner of project cost reports need to be tailored to the clients requirements from the earliest juncture in order to provide clear and contiguous financial status reporting.
