Doig+Smith is proud to have played a key role in delivering a bold, future-focused fit-out for NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and Public Health Scotland (PHS) at the landmark 177 Bothwell Street, Glasgow.
Working in close partnership with Austin-Smith:Lord (Architect & Interior Designer), Xburo (Services Engineer), Will Rudd (Structural Engineer) and main contractor Clark Contracts, the team has transformed the building’s fourth floor into a vibrant, collaborative environment designed to meet the evolving needs of modern working.
At 2,276 square metres, the Grade A space forms part of Glasgow’s largest and most forward-thinking office development, boasting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, 100% renewable energy supply, and advanced energy efficiency technologies. The open-plan, column-free layout supports flexibility and interaction, while enabling NES and PHS to reduce overall floorspace requirements and cut costs — including eliminating the need for hiring external training venues.
“This move will generate substantial operational savings year-on-year — money that can directly benefit the wider NHS in Scotland,” said Jim Boyle, Director of Finance, NHS Education for Scotland. “We have been extremely pleased with Doig+Smith’s role in the design and delivery, particularly their creative thinking and practical approach to bringing this vision to life.”
The new workspace reflects the post-COVID shift toward smarter working, with a mix of shared collaboration zones, quiet rooms, social areas with café facilities, and a versatile multi-functional space for up to 80 people, ideal for training and events.
This project not only promotes collaboration and efficiency but also sets a new benchmark for sustainable, innovative public sector workspaces in Scotland — underlining Doig+Smith’s reputation for delivering intelligent, future-ready environments.
