Project Description

The City of Edinburgh Council Bankhead ERS Depot is located in Bankhead, Edinburgh. It contains the following buildings, the Road Depot Offices, the main Stores building, an external Lighting Store and Salt Dome, a Garage which houses the road gully vehicles, the Crane Workshop building which currently houses the Blacksmiths Workshop which is linked (with toilet & plantroom facilities) to the Workshop building which contains the current Lighting, Joinery, Painters and Signage Workshops. There is also a De-watering Bay, Vehicle Wash-bay, Refuelling Station, numerous external storage areas and vehicle parking across the site. The works were carried out while the depot was operational and the work was completed in sections to accommodate this and allow the work to be carried out safely.

The project was fully completed in December 2023 and included the following works:

  • Works to improve the existing site entrance access facilities.
  • Works to Main Store building including Office extension, heating upgrade & adjacent external storage area.
  • Forming material tipping / arising bays to the south of the site.
  • Works to upgrade gully tank filling facilities.
  • Upgrading of Vehicle Wash-bay facilities.
  • Works to adapt the existing Joinery, Paint and Signage Workshop into a 5 bay Vehicle Maintenance Repair Workshop.
  • Works to adapt the existing Blacksmith Workshop into a Vehicle & Charging Store.
  • Works to adapt the existing Signage Workshop into Staff Accommodation facilities.
  • Improvements to existing de-watering facilities.
  • General external site works

Our Role / Scope

Doig + Smith were appointed to provide full Quantity Surveying services from the early design stages through to completion on site.

Doig and Smith produced various cost estimates through RIBA Stage 2 and Stage 3, working collaboratively with the Design Team and the end users to ensure that the emerging design met the needs of the users and remained within the Client’s budget.

Doig+Smith  produced a bills of quantities for inclusion in the overall tender document and  undertook a pre-tender estimate to ensure the Client had foresight of the likely value of the tender returns. Tender returned were analysed and cleansed with a subsequent tender report issued. Our services post tender included monthly valuations and cost reports as well as ongoing change managements.
