Project Description

This project involves the construction of a new High School that will form part of a wider masterplan which is intended to provide much needed regeneration to the Craigmillar area of Edinburgh. The school will be constructed adjacent to the newly completed library and community hub and will be central to forming the centre of the community.

The school is designed to accommodate 700 pupils but with future expansion in mind, some key areas are being added to phase 1 to minimise disruption at a later date.

The enabling works element of the project commenced on site during the 4th Quarter of 2019.

During Stage 2, we used our tried and tested methodologies to work through the sub-contractor tender returns, ensuring that the project delivered true value for money to the client and has a smooth transition from pre to post contract.

Whilst the initial prime cost was above the affordability cap, our collaborative relationship with the entire project team ensured that appropriate measures were taken and the project was brought back into line with the budget.

Our role continues post contract and covers monthly valuations and cost reports as well as monitoring and reporting on the change control process.
Our Role / Scope

Doig+Smith is undertaking the Cost Advisor Role for this project. This included early engagement to collaboratively develop a Feasibility Report for the project prior to issue of the NPR and commencement of Stage 1.

As the project progressed, we continued our close involvement with the Participant, Design Team and Contractor to ensure that the developing design took cognisance of the cost parameters and the scheme was being designed to cost.

We also undertook a number of Whole Life Cost exercises in conjunction with the Architect and Services engineer to assess the impact of differing U Values and Air Tightness figures on the Capex and Opex costs of the project to assist the Client in key design decisions.
